Summary: Students will understand the geographic location and features of the state of Georgia, and how each geographic region of Georgia contributes to our state's economy.

Lesson Plan:


Standards:

SS8G1 The student will describe Georgia with regard to physical features and location.
a. Locate Georgia in relation to region, nation, continent, and hemispheres.
b. Describe the five geographic regions of Georgia; include the Blue Ridge Mountains, Valley and Ridge, Appalachian Plateau, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain.
c. Locate and evaluate the importance of key physical features on the development of Georgia; include the Fall Line, Okefenokee Swamp, Appalachian Mountains, Chattahoochee and Savannah Rivers, and barrier islands.
d. Evaluate the impact of climate on Georgia's development.


EQs:

  • What is the relative location of GA in terms of global position, hemispheres, continent, nation, and regions?
  • What are the 5 physiographic regions of GA and what are the significant physical features or each?

Day 1: Getting Started with Geography of GA

Part 1: Pretest

  • Students will complete pretest.

Part 2: Vocabulary

  • Admit cards - Cards will be a set of terms and a set of definitions, students will pair up according to word and definition


  • Word Wall - Students will use construction paper to create visual representation and term in order to create the word wall.

Day 2: Map Activities

Day 3: Physiographic Regions of GA

  • Students will be creating a flip chart about the physiographic regions of Georgia.


Day 4: Show what you know... Choose Your Own Expressive Activity

  • Students should choose one activity to complete regarding key features in GA.
